What are Custom Orthotics?

Custom orthotics, often called shoe insoles or flatbeds, are prescription splints or braces made by taking 3D impressions of your feet.

These orthotics/insoles are designed to correct abnormal foot and lower limb posture. However, custom orthotics are not only made for shoes – they can also take the form of ankle braces, or in less common cases, braces for your knees, back, or even wrists.

How Do Custom Foot Orthotics Work?

Custom foot orthotics work according to the prescription provided by one of our expert podiatrists. The way they work in correcting your lower limb alignment will differ from the way they work for other patients.

This is because every unique orthotic is customised to change the way a specific patient's foot will sit and move, in order to correct general lower limb alignment. There are various ways that custom foot orthotics can correct your alignment, such as:

  • Providing improved stability for your feet

  • Giving a more solid structure and foundation to your foot arches

  • Alleviating extra pressure on painful lower limb joints

  • Generally improving your balance

  • Increasing optimal foot propulsion when walking and running

  • Providing support for tired muscles and joints

How are Custom Orthotics Made at Align Health Collective?

The creation of a custom orthotic is a multi-step process that begins with a 45-minute consultation with one of our specialist podiatrists. Your podiatrist will ask you specific questions about the symptoms related to your lower legs, back pain, heel or foot pain, and any foot conditions you may have been previously diagnosed with.

Thereafter, you may need to go for additional X-rays, CT scans, or ultrasound assessments. This will help our podiatrists understand your underlying foot pathology through proper diagnostic imaging.

After gaining a full understanding of your foot structure, symptoms, and underlying conditions, our specialists can begin the process of making your custom orthotics.

We will send your prescription to a state-of-the-art laboratory, where skilled technicians will make your 3D insoles (shoe inserts) to help support your unique foot conditions.

Cost of podiatry services

When considering podiatry services, understanding the cost involved is an important factor. The cost of podiatry services can vary depending on several factors, including the specific treatment or procedure, the location of the podiatrist, and any additional services or materials required. If you're wondering about the cost of podiatry services, you may come across keywords such as “podiatry cost,” “how much does a podiatrist cost,” “podiatrist cost,” “cost podiatrist,” or “cost of podiatry visit.” It's essential to note that podiatry costs are typically determined on a case-by-case basis, as each patient's needs and treatment plans may differ. Factors that can influence the cost include the complexity of the foot condition, the number of visits required, the need for specialised tests or diagnostic imaging, and the use of orthotics or other devices. To obtain accurate information about the cost of podiatry services, it's recommended to contact your chosen podiatrist directly. They can provide you with a breakdown of the fees associated with your specific treatment plan and any potential insurance coverage or payment options available. Remember, investing in proper foot care is crucial for maintaining your overall health and mobility. It's worth discussing the cost of podiatry services with your chosen podiatrist to ensure you receive the necessary care while being aware of any financial considerations.

Medicare coverage for podiatry services

When considering podiatry services, understanding the coverage provided by Medicare Australia is essential. Many individuals rely on Medicare for their healthcare needs, and questions may arise regarding the coverage for podiatry services. You may come across keywords such as “is podiatry covered by Medicare Australia,” “is podiatry covered by Medicare,” or “is ingrown toenail surgery covered by Medicare.” It's important to note that Medicare coverage for podiatry services can vary depending on the specific circumstances and requirements. In general, Medicare provides coverage for certain podiatry services when they are deemed medically necessary and meet specific criteria. This may include treatments related to chronic conditions, foot deformities, infections, or injuries that significantly impact mobility or quality of life. However, routine foot care, such as general nail care or callus removal, is typically not covered by Medicare unless it is directly related to an underlying medical condition. When it comes to ingrown toenail surgery, Medicare coverage may be available if the procedure is medically necessary to address an infection or alleviate pain. It's significant to consult with your podiatrist and Medicare directly to determine the specific coverage available for your individual case. They can provide detailed information about the Medicare coverage criteria, any out-of-pocket expenses, and guide you through the billing process. Remember to verify your coverage with Medicare and discuss any potential costs or reimbursement options with your podiatrist to ensure you have a clear understanding of the financial aspects associated with your podiatry services.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do orthotics change the shape of your foot?

No, orthotics provide support for your foot to relieve pain. They will not change the shape of your foot, but they will alter your foot posture.

Can orthotics help with knee pain?

Yes, because orthotics give your feet additional support, they can make a significant difference in the amount of pain you feel in your knees, lower back, and hips.

How often should I wear my orthotics?

Your podiatrist will give you a detailed breakdown and prescribe how frequently you should wear your orthotics. Generally, you will need to wear your orthotics when standing for long periods of time.

Who Might Need Custom Orthotics in Brisbane?

The only way to find out if you need custom orthotics is by scheduling a consultation with a healthcare professional, such as the specialists at Align Health Collective’s podiatry clinic.

However, there are certain conditions that are commonly associated with an orthotic treatment. If you suffer from any of the following, you should consider custom orthotics:

Custom orthotics are also a great treatment for children whose feet are still growing and who suffer from instability. Treating this early could prevent some of the above conditions from arising in the future!

Benefits of Custom Orthotic Treatments

Here are the main benefits that you will experience if you start wearing a custom orthotic:

  • Pain relief: The most obvious benefit is that orthotics will help relieve any pain you may be feeling in your feet, lower limbs, or spine. Pain relief occurs through improved balance, arch support, and joint pressure alleviation.

  • Future injury prevention: By providing extra support for your lower limbs and back, you will reduce the risk of suffering further injury.

  • Orthotics are removable: Custom orthotics are not the most aesthetically pleasing treatment, but they are completely removable. Most foot treatments, like insoles and flatbeds, are placed inside your shoes, so they won’t even be visible in the first place.

  • You can be more active: By relieving pain and discomfort, orthotics allow you to move freely and be more active. This could be hugely important for maintaining a healthy weight, staying on track with your workout regime, and your overall well-being.

How Long do Custom Orthotics Last?

Custom orthotics are designed to be a long-term treatment to help alleviate foot, joint, and limb pain. It makes sense that the braces, insoles, and flatbeds are made to be as durable as possible.

They are generally made to last anywhere between 1 and 5 years, but the lifespan will be affected by factors like volume of physical activity, how often you’re standing vs sitting, your weight, and the types of shoes you wear.
