What are the Pelvic Floor Muscles?
The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and ligaments that form a supportive sling at the base of your pelvis. They act like a hammock to hold your pelvic organs (bladder, bowel, and uterus in women) in place.
These muscles are crucial for maintaining bladder and bowel control. They also contribute to core stability, spinal support, and good posture, while playing a significant role in sexual function for both men and women.
What is Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy?
Pelvic floor physiotherapy is a specialised branch of physical therapy. It focuses on strengthening and rehabilitating the muscles of your pelvic floor. Both men and women can benefit from pelvic physical therapy.

Why are your Pelvic Floor Muscles Important?
Your pelvic floor muscles play a huge role in various bodily functions. If these muscles are weak, you may struggle with bladder and bowel control, sexual function, and other physiological processes. Physiotherapy for pelvic floor muscles can help you restore function and reduce pain.
- Bladder and bowel control: Strong pelvic floor muscles help you control when you urinate or have a bowel movement. Weak muscles can lead to issues like incontinence (unintentional leakage).
- Organ support: Pelvic floor muscles keep your bladder, bowel, and uterus (in women) in place. Weakening can lead to prolapse, which happens when one or more pelvic organs drop from their normal position.
- Core stability: Your pelvic floor works with your abs and back muscles to stabilise your spine and entire core. Good pelvic floor function is crucial for good posture and overall strength.
- Sexual function: Pelvic muscles also play a role in sexual arousal, orgasm, and general sexual enjoyment in both men and women.
What can Weaken Pelvic Floor Muscles?
The muscles of your pelvic floor can become weak from:
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Age
- Obesity
- Chronic constipation or straining
- Prolonged or repeated heavy lifting
- Surgery in the pelvic region (prostate surgery for men)
We recommend seeing a physiotherapist for pelvic floor muscles if you’ve experienced or are dealing with any of these. Contact us if you need pelvic floor physio in Brisbane – our dedicated team is here to help!

When You Might Need Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Brisbane

- Urinary incontinence: Leaking urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or exercise.
- Faecal incontinence: Difficulty controlling bowel movements or needing to run to the bathroom often.

- Diastasis recti: Separation of the abdominal muscles, which typically occurs after a pregnancy.
- Pelvic organ prolapse: When one or more of the pelvic organs drop or bulge into the vaginal wall due to weakened muscles.
- Before or after pelvic/abdominal surgery: To help regain strength and control in these areas.
Take control of your pelvic health! If you’re struggling with any of these issues, don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor or find a qualified pelvic floor PT in your area. Get in touch with us if you need a pelvic floor physiotherapist Brisbane.

Frequently Asked Questions Pelvic Floor Physio
How long does it take for pelvic floor physiotherapy to work?
Many people start to see improvements within 1 to 3 months of consistent treatment. However, progress can vary depending on your condition.
Is an internal exam necessary?
No. While internal exams can be very helpful, they are not mandatory. If you’re uncomfortable with having an internal exam, your physiotherapist can still provide valuable treatment and rehabilitation.
Is pelvic floor physiotherapy painful?
No, pelvic floor physiotherapy should not be painful. You might experience some mild discomfort with certain techniques or an internal exam. Your physiotherapist will work with you to adjust techniques and respect your comfort levels. The ultimate goal is to reduce pain and improve your pelvic health.
Is pelvic floor physiotherapy only for women?
No! While we do offer women’s health physio in Brisbane, men can also suffer from pelvic floor dysfunctions. Both men and women can benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy.
Will Medicare or my private health insurance cover pelvic floor physio?
Medicare covers eligible patients, but only five sessions are covered per calendar year. Your private health insurance may cover a portion of your physiotherapy costs. We can use our HICAPS machine to check your private health insurance coverage. We may be able to reduce your out-of-pocket costs. Align HC also offers treatment payment plans because we believe everyone should have access to high-quality healthcare.
