What is shockwave therapy? And is it actually as scary as it sounds?

If you have been into our Oakleigh podiatry clinic in the last 12 months with a musculoskeletal injury, we would have most likely spoke to you about our shockwave machine. We are very lucky to have one of these machines in the clinic, as even though the evidence is very strong supporting the effectiveness of shockwave therapy, not many clinics in Australia have access to one.

Is it as scary as the name suggests?

Not at all! Shockwave is an acoustic wave that travels through skin to promote tissue healing and pain relief. Depending on the level of pain you’re experiencing from your specific condition, there may be a feeling of slight discomfort during the treatment, however the shockwave itself is not usually described as painful.

What conditions does shockwave work well for?

  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Hamstring injuries
  • ITB syndrome
  • Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints)
  • Calf injuries

How does it work?

The shockwave application releases a P substance from the terminal vesicles of nerves which is responsible for causing an immediate decrease in pain. This process also causes blood vessels to dilate, resulting in increased blood flow which facilitates further healing of the tissue.

How many treatments will I need?

Even though most people report a decrease in pain levels immediately after treatment, it is recommended you have more than one session as the treatment is cumulative. Most people require at least 4-5 treatments with sessions spaced out at least one week apart, depending on the patient’s pain tolerance and their tissue response.

Having said this, shockwave is only one treatment method that us podiatrists or physios in Oakleigh/Kew can offer you. We use a wide range of other treatment options including dry needling, taping, orthotics as well as footwear advice, to ensure you the best possible treatment and outcome.
