Clinical Pilates and injury prevention

Clinical Pilates differs from Pilates as it takes a more personalised approach to treatment by focusing on exercises that are specific to your individual needs. The class is adaptable and will change to suit clients injuries, level of fitness and abilities. The goal of treatment is to activate certain muscles in the body that will aid in a safe recovery and allow for a faster return to sport/activity. If you are recovering from an injury, general pilates may not be appropriate as certain positions and exercises may actually put you at further risk of injury or aggravate the existing injury. Our Clinical Pilates classes are conducted by a trained physiotherapist who are experts in understanding how certain exercises can have an effect on injury and recovery.
Even if you do not have a current injury, clinical pilates is good for injury prevention as it addresses risk factors for injury including a lack of muscular support, muscular imbalances and poor posture. Our physiotherapist will use a combination of Reformer Pilates and Mat Pilates in order to achieve your desired outcome.
The goal of Mat Pilates is to strengthen the body's abdominals, lower back muscles, as well as improve pelvic floor, hips and glutes. With the aid of resistance bands, weights and rings, the floor exercises will help build and strengthen these muscles while still remaining a low-impact exercise that is gentle on the joints. The exercises will also aid in flexibility and improving posture and there is a strong focus on connecting your breathing to the exercises.
Reformer Pilates builds on the benefits of Mat Pilates by adding resistance from the pulley and spring system and allowing your body to move through its full range of motion. The bars and cables also allows for a more comprehensive workout allowing you to work your arms and legs more thoroughly. The tension of the springs on the moving carriage adjust to different levels of difficulty, so as you become stronger you are able to progress in exercises.
We offer one-on-one classes as well as small group classes (maximum of 4), which run from 20 to 45 minutes. Patients will undergo a short assessment prior to beginning their first class, so the physiotherapist can identify areas of work. Our Clinical Pilates classes can also be claimed through private health insurance.
